About this Project
For decades, Embu town's traders operated in conditions widely described as unacceptable overcrowded stalls, poor sanitation, flooding during rains, and vendors spilling into streets and pavements. The old market had long outgrown its capacity, and calls for a modern replacement had gone unanswered through multiple administrations.
Governor Cecily Mbarire's administration moved decisively. Construction of the Embu Town Modern Market Complex began in 2024 a joint investment between the national and county governments and represents one of the single largest commercial infrastructure investments in Embu's history at KSh 1.04 billion.
The new facility will accommodate approximately 3,500 traders across dedicated sections for fresh produce, cereals, livestock products, textiles, hardware, and food courts. It features modern sanitation blocks, covered loading bays, cold storage facilities for perishables, and a secure banking hall. Wi-Fi connectivity and digital payment infrastructure will be integrated throughout, modernising how business is done.
By July 2025, the county had already completed and handed over several satellite markets , Runyenjes Main Market, Mbuvori, Karurumo, and Ishiara ahead of the flagship Embu Town complex. These markets have already relocated thousands of informal traders into dignified, organised trading environments, boosting local economic activity and tax revenues.
When fully complete, the Embu Town Market will serve as the commercial anchor of the Mt. Kenya East region, drawing buyers and sellers from across Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, and Kitui counties.
